The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
